What we know about you

Almost nothing, and this page is the specific list rather than a paragraph reserving the right to collect anything at all.

The short version

• You can read the whole magazine without telling us anything.
• There are no advertising trackers and no analytics scripts.
• We set no cookies of our own.
• We never sell, rent or share your email address with anybody.

What we collect, and only if you do something

Your email address — if you join the list

If you type your address into the signup box, we store the address, which page you signed up from, and the date. That is the whole record. We use it to email you when there is a new story, and for nothing else.

Every email has an unsubscribe link that works in one tap and asks you no questions. You can also write to erica@ziainsider.com and we will remove you.

Button taps on a business listing

When somebody taps Call, Directions, Website, Instagram or Book on a listing, we record which business, which button and when — so we can tell that business how many people reached them. We do not record who tapped it. There is no name, no address and no identifier of any kind attached to a tap, so these records cannot be traced back to a person, including by us.

Notifications — if you use the app and allow them

If you install the iPhone app and say yes to notifications, Apple gives us a device token so we can send you an alert about a new story. It identifies a phone, not a person. Turn notifications off in iOS Settings and it stops being used.

Stories you save

Saved stories are stored on your own device so you can read them with no signal. They stay there. We cannot see what you have saved.

What happens automatically

The companies that host the magazine keep ordinary server logs, which include IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running. That is standard for any website and we do not use those logs to build a picture of you.

We also keep a security record of failed attempts to open private preview links, to spot somebody guessing at them. Where that record refers to a visitor at all, it stores a one-way scrambled value rather than an address — it can confirm the same visitor tried repeatedly, and cannot be turned back into who they were.

Who else is involved

We keep the magazine deliberately small, and these are all of them:

• Vercel — hosts the website.
• Supabase — stores the stories, the photographs and the email list.
• Resend — sends the emails, and is given an address only in order to deliver one.
• Apple — delivers notifications to the app.

None of them are given your information for their own purposes, and none of it is sold to anyone.

How long we keep it

Your email address stays until you unsubscribe. When you do, we mark the record as unsubscribed rather than deleting the row — which is what stops you being added back by accident from an old export. If you would rather it were erased completely, say so and we will erase it.

Children

The magazine is not aimed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. Young people appear in the stories, with the permission of the people responsible for them.

Your say

Write to erica@ziainsider.com and ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. There is no form and no account to log into. A person reads it.

Changes

If this changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and — if you are on the email list — we will tell you rather than quietly editing the page.
